Explicit GamificationIn explicit gamificaton, users know they are playing a game and willingly opt in. An example would be the McDonald's Monopoly game. Users know they are playing a game, and the designers hope they will return to buy more products. Advantages of this model include its playfulness and designers are generally given a lot of creative freedom. Disadvantages include the danger of the game seeming not serious or childish.

Implicit GamificationImplicit gamification utilizes game elements in less obvious way to the user. The game elements could even be invisible to the user. Ebay and its competitive bidding model is an example of this. Users are subtly exposed to competitive motivating factors that increase prices and the number of bidders. These experiences tend to be technically easier to create and is appropriate in a wider range of contexts than explicit game elements. If the game elements are not correctly designed, they could have the a demotivating effect. |
